SPRINGTOWN – Work will begin next week on Farm to Market Road 51. The $23 million project will reconstruct the existing two-lane roadway from north of Old Cottondale Road to Texas Drive to add a center turn lane, raise the SH 199/FM 51 intersection and replace the bridge over Walnut Creek. The 1.6-mile project will enhance safety and mobility for pedestrians and motorists.

Weather permitting, FM 51 will be closed from SH 199 to 2nd Street beginning on Monday, Sept. 30 to install underground drainage and utilities. Access to downtown businesses and residences will be maintained by using open cross streets including Spur 182, 1st Street 2nd Street, and Optimist Street. Through traffic will be detoured to Pojo Road. Off-duty officers will be utilized along the detour route during school morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Traffic will be directed with portable electronic messaging boards and detour and wayfinding signage.

As construction progresses, project updates will be posted at www.cityofspringtown.com.

TxDOT asks motorists to be alert, follow all traffic signs and adjust speed with this new traffic pattern and during construction. Check www.drivetexas.org for lane closures. The project was awarded to Texas Sterling Construction of Houston, and it is estimated for completion in 2022.
